Swallowtail Place in Acle, Norfolk is a £11.3m development made up of 58 apartments, that will provide on-site, round-the-clock care to those over 55 with care needs to continue to live independent lives.

The scheme, built on the site of the former Herondale care home, has been funded and developed in a partnership between Saffron Housing Trust, Norfolk County Council and Homes England.

We were appointed design consultant by Saffron Housing and main contractor RG Carter and through a series of online meetings produced the catering facility layout.

The client was very interested in our design ethos of creating energy conscious environments whilst maintaining a sustainably aware attitude throughout the design process and into manufacture. Key pieces of equipment were selected for their low energy consumption, and “stand by” functionality.

Good quality refrigeration units were used to lower energy costs, and low-heat generation from items like the fridges, dishwasher and induction ranges create both a nicer working environment and ease the extraction system requirements.

The kitchen was designed to provide residents and their guests with nutritious and locally sourced food, with a good level of on-site preparation and baking being essential. A varied daily menu was available to the residents, meaning that we had to provide real flexibility with the equipment, without oversizing the kitchen space, or increasing the budget.

Future-proofing the area with the potential to incorporate new equipment was also a large consideration meaning that the kitchen output could be increased in time.

The area was successfully installed and handed over to RG Carter in the autumn of 2022, followed by a series of on-site equipment training sessions to the kitchen operator in 2023.
