In Autumn 2020, award winning, luxury builder Grocott and Murfit and EFD partnered up to create something special in the small town of South Creake, just outside Fakenham in North Norfolk.

The Ostrich dates to at least 1841. It was once only one of seven inns in the village, and has been a hub for the community ever since, known as both The Ostrich and Plume of Feathers. Owner Daniel Grocott discussed his exciting development plans for the future of the location with us, and straight away we knew it was a match made in heaven.

They believed this was a great location for a high-end pub restaurant with rooms, sourcing affordable local produce and becoming a venue for both the local community, and travelling holiday makers.

Following the initial survey it was decided to relocate the kitchen from its current location and restructure the whole area. The building was essentially going to be completely stripped down and rebuilt from the inside, so the relocation and resizing of the kitchen, could then be arranged with new waste and extraction facilities.

It was also decided early on that this would be an all-electric kitchen, designed specifically for new head chef Jes Paskin, previously Executive chef de cuisine on the exceptional Seabourn Cruise Ships, consisting of a unique and bespoke design.

Using our extensive knowledge of good quality commercial equipment, as well as bespoke engineering, we set out to create a double sided cookline in the heart of the kitchen, allowing outstanding flexibility, volume and clear communication.

Recreating Chef Jes’s previous experience in such a small area, would always be a challenge, but it was one we were thrilled to take on. The central suite, was designed with dedicated zones, consisting of; 4-zone induction, plancha griddle, twin-tank fryer, chargrill, salamander, pasta boiler, and the remarkable Rational Vario cooker. The suite was then backed up with two 6-grid Rational combination ovens, underneath their own recirculating ventilation hood.

Given the type of equipment we wanted to use, the space we had, and the desire to use the fantastic Williams undercounter fridge/freezer drawers, we designed and engineered a completely bespoke base unit, to not only support the equipment, but contain the relevant electrical and water services required, as well as being fully accessible for cleaning and any future maintenance.

A fully bespoke extraction and fresh air system was designed and installed by EFD to not only run in the kitchen as quietly as possible, but also provide the necessary EHO requirements, including external noise, fire rating and odour output.

Installed expertly by Elite Interiors, the area was completely clad with Altro Whiterock wall cladding, as well as their Stronghold vinyl flooring with wash down gullies in order to provide the highest hygiene results possible.

We wanted to create an interesting element to the kitchen area, so the chef’s pass included a large window, allowing guests to see right into the kitchen area and see exactly how their meals are made! Finished with a stainless picture frame and vinyl fire shutter, this beautiful dining area is a must for any foodies and aspiring chefs who want to watch the great Ostrich team in action.

Along with this innovative modern kitchen, EFD designed and installed a back of house wash up area, an external bakery prep and coldstore, and the stainless steel under bar units. Working closely with the builder’s sister company and interior designers Arcadia Home & Living, we have created a gorgeous front of house environment befitting of the love and hard work that was poured into this project by everyone involved.

Having hosted many events and helping mark so many special occasions over the years, the local residents are excited to have The Ostrich Inn reopened, and on its 180th anniversary year too!
