Hot on the heels of handing over the stunning Ostrich Inn kitchen project, Grocott & Murfit again appointed EFD the design and install works at their next dining venture.

This time they had purchased an existing grade II listed restaurant in the heart of the market town of Fakenham, and were going to give it one of their unique and high-end refurbishments.

The name “Red Lion” dates back to Tudor times and over the centuries has been known as The Sign of the Red Lion, The Lion Hotel and The Red Lion Inn.  From 1976 to 2000 the building was used as Council offices, with the registry office located on the first floor. Most recently it was called The Gallery Bistro.

This was to be a much faster turnaround than previously at the Ostrich, and with the availability of catering equipment starting to become an issue, we worked fast to create a kitchen layout, and specification of outstanding equipment, within a sensible budget.

The small kitchen area was laid out with a versatile array of cooking systems, including a twin solid top oven range, plancha griddle, twin tank fryer, salamander and Rational combination oven. Two upright cabinets and two fridge prep counters were included in the kitchen area, with additional fridge storage downstairs in the bar store.

A separate wash up area was formed to remove any dirties returning into the kitchen itself. A hot chef’s pass was also positioned to keep as much traffic out of the kitchen, and allow good service routes to both the upstairs dining room, and the dumb waiter.

Elite Interiors were once again brought in to install Altro whiterock wall cladding to the kitchen and new wash up and corridor areas, as well as extend the existing vinyl flooring. As design consultants, we always strive to ensure that the hygienic foundations of a kitchen are adhered to prior to installation of new equipment, ensuring no expensive and untoward refurbishments are needed when the environmental health officers have inspected.

As well as the upstairs kitchen, we also created the footprint for the ground floor cocktail bar, working closely with the builders in-house interior designers, and supplied the bespoke stainless steel underbar system.

The Red Lion Lounge celebrates the Art Deco period which perfectly complements the architecture of this historic building, offering a relaxed and stylish setting for its guests to enjoy.
